Apollonia on X, 1980's
Parkinson stated that “If you are going to be an artist -
even a photographer - I think you have to have a major in
fantasy.” This mind set was well suited to extravagant,
celebrity-fuelled culture of the 1980s. Parkinson was a
great fan of Apollonia, the model in this shot, who he
described as “intrepid and fearless.” He felt that some of
his very best shots were taken with her, attributed to her
fierce and adventurous nature.

Photographer Norman Parkinson was both a superb craftsman and a
consummate artist. From his first shoot in 1935, he brought a
dramatic glamour, bold inventiveness, and daring new sense of
individuality to the fashion portrait. “If a girl looks like a
model,” he said, “she is not for my lens.” Parkinson’s ideal was
embodied by sitters like Jerry Hall, Iman, and Appollonia van
Ravenstein. His long association with VOGUE, and his many
assignments for HARPER’S BAZAAR, QUEEN, and other international
magazines, brought him both fame and recognition. In return, he
gave the fashion world ineffable style. This stunning volume—organized
by decade and illustrated with fashion plates, portraits, and
contact sheets—is a lavish record of a career that encompassed—and
informed—five decades of fashion. Robin Muir, a fashion curator,

ANTON PERICH INTERVIEW
Who was your favorite person to photograph at Studio 54, and why?
AP: It was women, tons of women And then there was Victor Hugo.
The great original performance artist, imitated by everybody on
today’s official gallery scene. He did it all there, every night
a new incarnation. Yet, he is totally igno red by today’s
miserable NY art world. Apollonia van Ravenstein was the most
beautiful. Carole Bouquet was the second most beautiful. |

van een beroemd fotomodel. Ze is niet

spanningen van haar werkelijke
emotionele leven, zoals dat in haar
dagboeken naar voren komt, tegenover
elkaar. De hoofdrol in de film wordt
gespeeld door Apollonia van Ravenstein,
schoenmakersdochter uit een gezin van
zeven kinderen uit Geldrop. Zij begon
haar carrière in Italië en stond vele
malen op de omslagen van beroemde
Europese modebladen. In 1972 kwam ze

Seraphita's Diary

The story of a famous fashion model who, unable to cope with the
fantasies and pressures her beauty induces in others, disappears.
The film is a profile of her emotional life and contrasts the
fantasies she creates in other people's minds with the strains
of her real emotional life as revealed in her diaries.
SERAPHITA’S DIARY is an extension of Wiseman’s nonfiction
preoccupation, a one-woman show in which the highfashion model

–Ken Wlaschin, London Film Festival Programme

Frederick Wiseman,
best known for his documentaries, directed this drama exploring
the interior world of a fashion model. It received an Honorable
Mention at the Festival Dei Popoli and won the Gold Special Jury
Award from the 1983 Houston Film Festival. Famous fashion model
Seraphita (Apollonia Van Ravenstein) is unable to deal with the
reactions her beauty induces in others, and one day she
disappears. The 90-minute film reflects her mental landscape,
contrasting fantasies she creates in other people's minds with
the strains of her emotional life as revealed through passages
from her diaries. In his 1982 London Film Festival notes, Ken
Wlaschin described it as "a visual feast with some of the most
amazing costumes ever seen on the screen." Shown in 1983 at the
Manila Film Festival and the Rotterdam Film Festival. ~ Bhob

Personal Best
PLOT DESCRIPTION
Starring Patrice Donnelly, Scott Glenn, Jim Moody, Kenny Moore,
Mariel Hemingway. Directed by Robert Towne. (R, 130 minutes).
In 1982, there was a brief cycle of homosexual-relationship
films, none of which was successful enough to form the basis of
a trend. Producer/director/writer Robert Towne's Personal Best
stars Mariel Hemingway and Patrice Donnelly as athletes
participating in the 1980 Olympics. Growing ever closer during
the training process, Hemingway and Donnelly fall in love. Up to
this point, Hemingway has been "straight," thus has trouble
sustaining the relationship with older Donnelly. Their
relationship is counterbalanced with the attitudes held by their
male coach, Scott Glenn. While the homosexual element of the
film is secondary to the endless shots of athletes in training (one
would think that director Towne had a foot fetish), the critics
latched on to the film's romantic angle, which may have
sabotaged its chances for box office success (the world was a
different place in 1982). Personal Best was the directorial
debut for Robert Towne, who was not to direct another film until
1987's Tequila Sunrise. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
